Sophie J. (Markiewicz) Messich, 86, formerly of Greensburg, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, in Excela Health Latrobe Hospital. She was born May 11, 1931, in Latrobe, a daughter of the late Ludwik and Josephine (Firly) Markiewicz. Prior to retirement, she had been a registered nurse at Westmoreland Manor, and later Westmoreland Hospital. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg. She was a graduate of Latrobe High School and a 1952 graduate of Latrobe Hospital School of Nursing. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul P. "Pie" Messich, on Oct. 12, 1974. She is survived by two sons, Paul Richard Messich and wife, Krystal L. Kantorik, of Mt. Pleasant, and Thomas Edward Messich and wife, Denise Kontetta, of Harrison City; two daughters, Karen Messich Sweeney-Ryall and husband, Roger Ryall, of Greensburg, and Joanne DeFelice, of Jeannette; 10 grandchildren, Christina, Laura, Tim, Natalie, Pierre, Bryan, Abbey, Cole, Lainie and James; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandaughter; a sister, Helen Lightcap, of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton St., Greensburg. Prayers will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg.
